Celebrating International Women's Day

Exploring Girls’ Participation in Competitive Badminton

Over the past 100 years, Badminton Canada has seen incredible success by numerous female Canadian athletes. In recognition of International Women’s Day, Badminton Canada would like to release the research findings of the study carried out in collaboration with the University of Toronto, Exploring Girls’ Participation in Competitive Badminton, to ensure we have another 100 years of female success in our sport.

The purpose of the study was to look at participation and drop-out rates of adolescents between the ages of 13-18, to find out what influences contribute to the high drop-out rate of adolescent girls and the underrepresentation of females in coaching and leadership roles in badminton.

Based on these findings, developing actionable strategies including more women coaches, role models, and offering more mid-level performance opportunities might lead to a better environment and greater retention of girls in badminton.
